At the heart of my motivation to write lies the profound release it offers. Writing is a way to channel my thoughts, feelings, and experiences into a medium that captures them and transforms them into something meaningful. It’s an outlet through which I can be creative — where I can, at least momentarily, quell the story beast.
“Writing, to me, is simply thinking through my fingers.”
— Isaac Asimov, (quote taken from selfpublishing.com)
This quote resonates with me because I am what I have heard referred to as a “pantser”. The story flows from my finger tips as I write. But it is the push to write that keeps me awake at night. It could even be a single sentence, which then turns into ten, and before I know it, it’s eleven p.m. and my boyfriend is asking me when I’m going to bed.
I have never been a good sleeper. Less so when I have a story percolating in my mind. Often, when I lay awake, ideas whirling in my mind like a pinwheel in a wind storm, the only way to quiet the thoughts is to get them out. Only when the energy has been expended can I rise from my chair, snuggle into bed, and finally rest.
